If you're very, very lucky you may see a Felis Concolor while hiking in the Big Sur area. Many of the locals have never been so lucky as to spot one of the cougars dwelling in the preserve areas. Although strong and powerful, these elusive, quiet cats are rarely a threat to people. Just make lots of noise so you don't surprise one - they don't like that!

Extending from Carmel about 90 miles (145 kilometers) southward to San Simeon, this exotic locale seemed huge to early settlers in Monterey.
