Big Sur, CA

If you're very, very lucky you may see a Felis Concolor while hiking in the Big Sur area. Many of the locals have never been so lucky as to spot one of the cougars dwelling in the preserve areas. Although strong and powerful, these elusive, quiet cats are rarely a threat to people. Just make lots of noise so you don't surprise one - they don't like that!

Extending from Carmel about 90 miles (145 kilometers) southward to San Simeon, this exotic locale seemed huge to early settlers in Monterey. Its coastline is especially treacherous to ships, so it remained largely unexplored. They referred to the area as "el grande pais del sur" (the big country of the south), which was later Anglicized into Big Sur.

When you mention "Big Sur," many people think of the Point Sur Lightstation State Historic Park. Its beautiful waterfall is accessible by trail, and is sheltered by canyon walls and large trees. This is a place to relax and enjoy the amazing views. Sometimes at sunset cotton candy clouds hang on the hillsides.

One of the most ecologically diverse regions in North America, this remarkable setting is a haven for many species of terrestrial and marine wildlife. Here fog-loving coastal redwoods share a canyon with yuccas. Sea otters and cormorants share a habitat with canyon wrens and whiptail lizards.

Come, visit this exquisite wilderness that has inspired artists, poets, naturalists, and hiker. It will do the same for you.
