Mendocino, CA

Mendocino County doesn't have hordes of people jostling for elbow room. The serenity of this rural area of small towns, vineyards, and farms belies its proximity to the bustle of San Francisco. The County seat is Ukiah, with a small-town atmosphere and a strong sense of community, diverse population, and high quality of life.

Willits is rich in history with beautiful scenery, from rolling hills to picturesque ranches dotting the landscape. Named after Hiram Willits, it was settled by pioneering ranchers in the 1850s. Willits is the eastern terminus of the world famous "Skunk Train" and home to the Mendocino County Museum, which has one of the finest collections of Pomo and Yuki Baskets in the world. Willits Frontier Days, the annual 4th of July event, boasts of being the "Oldest Continuous Rodeo in the State of California."

Mendocino County is also home to Anderson Valley wineries, a magical mix of grazing sheep, vineyards, orchards, oaks and redwoods that continue to amaze both visitors and residents. The scenic 25 mile drive from Yorkville to Navarro winds past apple orchards, olive groves, vineyards and wineries surrounded by wooded hillsides.

The small cluster of homes that comprise the village of Caspar huddle together for protection from the storms blowing in from the Pacific. However, this community boasts two perfect beaches, art galleries, and a strong sense of place. Slow down and take a closer look as you drive between Fort Bragg and Mendocino.

There are other wonderful areas to visit in Mendocino: the magical Elk Coast encompassing the villages of Elk, Manchester and Point Arena; Irish Beach; Gualala, and Covelo/Round Valley are just a few.

With more than 50 miles (80.47 kilometers) of spectacular, craggy coastline interspersed with coves and sandy beaches complemented by vineyards, pear orchards and forested coastal mountains, it's no wonder so many fine artists, potters, and sculptors of iron, wire and steel proudly call Mendocino County home. You're certain to love it, too.
